In the headliner role, critically acclaimed, Latin Grammy winning Céu’s return to the States after an entire year away was the most anticipated moment of the evening. After the success of her debut album and her new CD Vagarosa, this 29 year-old Sao Paulo native was ready to take no prisoners in a fashion that cannot be experienced when simply hearing her songs in a local Starbucks.
Where Laquidara had a more youthful sensuality, Cèu pranced on the stage in a wildly seductive and wickedly confident manner, wearing a flowered hat and a short, tight black dress barely covering her shapely figure. Guilherme Ribeiro’s sinister, post-60’s, Sly Stone funk-drenched keyboard work cued the band and complemented Ceu’s predatory, snake-like moves. The rest of her band — Guilherme Ribeiro playing keyboards, accordion, guitar, and backing vocals, DJ Marco on scratches and samples, Lucas Martins on bass, and Samuel Fraga on drums – easily covered the wide stylistic range of Céu’s music.

On Monday, January 26th Sherry and I went to see the Curumin show at CSPS. I was pretty interested to see this show. Curumin is part of the next generation of artists on on the seminal Bay Area Hip-Hop label Quannum. The first generation were primarily Hip Hop acts: DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, Lateef and Blackalicious, and while the label still signs Rap and Hip Hop acts they have also signed artists who don’t neatly fit into that category: ApSci is closer to an electro act and Honeycut is damn near a synth pop band. One of the labels latest signings Curumin brings a fusion of hip hop, funk, soul and Brazilian styles playing equally the parts of producer and performer.
Lucas, Curumin & Marcelo
The show was one of the more spirited shows I’ve seen at CSPS– certainly a departure from regular diet of stripped-down folk-singer songwriter shows I usually attend there. This was also the first show I’d seen that used the actual stage at CSPS. Usually the small acts are on a set of risers on the floor in front of the stage. This fact alone invited some folks to actually get out and “express themselves physically” in Mel Andringa’s words from his funny introduction to the group.
Loco Sosa about his stay at the Royalton in NYC with Curumin
By urbanjungle on Feb 26, 2009 | In curumin, TOURS
It has been almost 15 days, 5 airports, vans, 8 different cities in 7 states, 8 different hotels, wake up, play, pack, off to the next gig…
NYC was our last stop. I was already used to share the room with our good looking snorer Tour Manager but I was happy just for the fact of being able to stay at the same place for more than one night.

I had an opportunity to watch Curumin perform with “special guests Tommy Guerro, Blackalicious, Lateef and Money Mark” at Slims in SF on January 22, 2009.
The opening band (didn’t catch the name, but think baby Manu Chao) had just finished and the stage was set. Curumin, a thin, jerky man in his early to mid 30s, with a shaved head, turn-of-the-century presidential sideburns framing his long face, baggy pants, and boldly striped polo shirt, took the stage with his reticent bassist, and drummer/percussionist (who resembled a lither version of Seth Rogan). Guest stars Money Mark (keys), Tommy Guerrero (guitar) and Lateef the Truthspeaker (MC) and Chief Xcel (DJ) would also join in throughout the evening (Gift of Gab was absent). Curumin’s music, categorically placed under the broad genre Música Popular Brasileira (categorically only), was a melding of funky electro and acoustic sampling (a nod to the legends of Bossa Nova and Samba), groovy bass lines, tight creative percussion and dancehall/hip-hop rhythms. Curamin and his posse were technically very good, and the music was very, very good.
