Télépathique + Tricky concert: NY TIMES review
By urbanjungle on Sep 8, 2008 | In telepathique

"The opening band, Télépathique, is Brazilian, from Sao Paulo, and played slyly metamorphosing dance music: electro to dance-rock to techno to funk, as Érico Theobaldo moved among turntables, laptops and a drum kit. The band’s blithe grooves and tales of desire link it to the knowing internationalist hedonism of CSS, from Brazil, and the Brazilian Girls, from New York City, with plenty of its own smart twists.
Mylene, the band’s singer, arrived onstage in a red dress that showed off her tattoos, started moving to the synth-pop beat and sang, 'I’m not the man you think I am/I’m not that kind of guy.'"

September 4th, 2008 - The Filmore at Irving Plaza - New York, NY - Tricky w/ Télépathique
Images and Review by Dominick Mastrangelo
Brazilian dance/electronica upstarts, Télépathique, brought their laptops and irresistibly catchy dance tunes to the Filmore last Thursday. While headliner, and trip-hop maestro, Tricky, spent the majority of his set silhouetted or with his back to the stage, Télépathique brought the near-capacity crowd much closer than arm's length. Vocalist, Mylene, hopped into the crowd at one point to sing and constantly leaned out over the audience as her band performed songs from their debut full-length, Last Time On Earth (a record that's been out for two years in their country but just saw its American release last month.) To be sure, most of the crowd was there to see Tricky who is touring on his new record Knowle West Boy, but on the night it was Télépathique who were good value and all the more entertaining.

"The trio of producer Erico “DJ Periferico” Theobaldo, vocalist Mylene, and an Apple laptop, Télépathique has been active in their hometown of São Paulo, Brazil for several years. Only now is the group seeing the North American release of its 2006 debut, with its 11 tracks of guitar- and synth-striated robo-funk. The human duo excels in sounding like patch chords and live PAs–the pleasurably forward tones come across as quarter-inch stereo, not 96 kHz digital. There’s an echo of manually triggered immediacy that ties this release more to the progressive breakbeat of the ’90s than any contemporary scene. Following the man-machine timeline from Kraftwerk to favela soundsystems, Télépathique hybridizes to clap, clap those thighs-ez."

CD Review: Telepathique debut full-length release ‘Last Time On Earth’ by the Washington City Paper

Music writers often adhere to the rule of three: When it comes to describing a musical style, referencing two bands isn’t enough (and four is just showing off). Thankfully, anybody covering modern electro-funk-carioca now has São Paolo’s Télépathique to cite in addition to better-known Brazilian dance acts Bonde Do Role and Cansei de Ser Sexy. American audiences are likely more familiar with the latter groups for their songs’ placement in television commercials—Bonde Do Role’s “Solta O Frango” for Nokia and Cansei de Ser Sexy’s “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” for Apple—than for any exposure on the dance floor. Télépathique, comprised of DJ-drummer Erico Theobaldo and singer Mylene Pires, shares some musical elements with those two acts—its debut full-length, Last Time on Earth (released in South America in 2006), features live drumming paired with programmed beats, punk attitude, carnal themes, and female vocals that switch between English and Portuguese. But the duo differs from its contemporaries by being less goofy, creating a more straightforward, four-on-the-floor dance sound influenced by house and breakbeat. The leadoff track, “Déjà-vu,” begins with Pires coolly intoning, “I’m not what you think I am/Never gonna be,” while Theobaldo works overtime playing drums and guitar and tweaking the overall sound. (He processes Pires’ vocals through a nifty staccato effect—one he apparently likes so much he recycles it on “Sex, Drugs and Funk and Roll.”) Pires may be the face of Télépathique, but Theobaldo is undeniably the architect of the band’s sound, which is why a track like “Wild” succeeds with minimal vocal contributions. Pushing eight minutes long, the song takes its time working up to a steady old-school house beat before Pires finally comes along to offer a few brief breathy lines. Theobaldo embellishes the tune with high-end whines and low-synth rumbles before the tune unexpectedly devolves into what sounds like a Galaga arcade game overheating. A more traditional bossa nova side, though, emerges on “Vida Inteira”: Over a lively but relaxed beat, Pires gets a chance to show off her pipes for a bit, sounding like a cross between Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and Sade. Last Time on Earth has a couple of 12-inches’ worth of stellar sexed-up tracks, though there are a few clunkers, like the repetitive “Telefunk” and the unfocused “Kabalah.” But even if Télépathique doesn’t enjoy the breakout success of its contemporaries, the album is unlikely to leave any listener, as Pires sings on “I’m Not the Man You Think I Am,” “burning with indifference.”

Title: Last Time On Earth
Release Date: August 5th
Label: Urban Jungle/The Control Group
Thoughts: Okay, I might as well come clean and admit that this is not a true leak. In fact the music on Last Time On Earth is over two years old, but it is just now coming to the States and so it qualifies as an official leak in that sense. Plus, this music is great so who really minds me chatting about it no matter where I decide to place it on the olde blog! Hailing from Brazil, Telepathique is a duo that makes some truly insane dance music. Mixing elements of mixed rock music, straight electronics, synths, and vocals, this is the perfect blend of genres to get the body moving. But it's not just dance music, there's an overall air of aggression and punk aesthetics that plays throughout this album. It's gritty, it's dirty, and it's pretty angry, despite having beats that could break ankles at all the best clubs. In simpler words, it transcends genre and could fit just about anywhere that people find themselves in the need to dance but to also feel like they're rebelling against something. This is really good and it does not matter in the least that it's actually two years old, I just hope that we don't get their next release so late!

CD Review: Telepathique brings Last Time On Earth to the States

Telepathique is comprised of DJ/producer/drummer Erico Theobaldo (aka DJ Periferico) and vocalist Mylene Pires, the duo mixes deep carioca from the favela with jungle-tinged house, electro, breakbeat and old school bossa with a sensibility that is deeply punk, and truly of their city. Last Time On Earth continues the genre-bending dialogue that Telepathique’s Love and Lust EP engages in. Last Time on Earth, their debut full-length, saw its original South American release in 2006; this is the first time Telepathique’s music has been released in North America. Both Theobaldo and Pires have long been accomplished in their own rights overseas, with and outside of their work in Telepathique. Pires’ solo work as a vocalist is steeped in African and Brazilian music traditions, and Theobaldos remix of “Dadinho” on the ‘City Of God” soundtrack became a smash hit. Last Time On Earth was intimately recorded and produced by the duo using only a laptop, a couple of microphones, synths, a guitar, Pires’ voice, and the pair’s beat instincts. Telepathique will tour the United States for the first time in support of Last Time On Earth.

Amazing Brazilian duo, Telepathique, are back to release their debut full-length in North America. You may have heard a bit of buzz about them this past Spring as Pitchfork included their song and video for “Eu Gosto” in their forkcast and SPIN in their SPIN MIX as “Songs You Need to Download Now” in the May 2008 issue.

Mover and shakers from Sao Paulo.
Another Brazilian wonder! This is a WOW album for dancing or getting work done around the house.
When I picked up this CD to play, I had no idea what a Brazilian group would be playing that would pique my interest. I guess I expected Ipenema music but it didn’t take me long to find out the truth when I heard the first track on this 4-song album that also includes a video. The track has a great dance beat and segues into track two so the dancing can continue. The duo is composed of Mylene who does all the vocals and Erico Theoboldo who plays all the instruments (drums, electric piano and acoustics). The guitars are played by Marcel Dadalto.
Much to my surprise, the group does quite well with vocals and instrumentals. The beat is consistent on all four tracks and leads the way for the music to follow. I can just imagine how crowded the dancefloor would be with this music pumping in the background. The music is a mixture of trance and electronica as well as “jungle music” and isn’t unpleasing to the ear.

"Sometimes, you find really original music that crosses the boundaries, and paves the way for new trends. I think that Telepathique's debut album, Last Time On Earth, is one of those ground-breaking albums. And I'm not the only one that thinks so."
